Vito took the lead with his second run a Crippler, Backside Mute, Frontside Double Cork, Cab Double Cork Truckdriver and Frontside and was still in first place going into the third of his three Finals runs. This contest was far from over just as Ryo Aono, landed the run he wanted. Vito tried to answer with huge back-to-back-to-back double corks in his final run, but couldn't put it together.
As always, Louie tried to up the ante and if he had landed that run there would have been little doubt of the outcome. Louie's score from his second run held on for a second place podium finish. This year, they decided to stop speculating and start making pound-for-pound comparisons. What was discovered might surprise you: NFL ballers and action sports stars have a lot in common when it comes to physical gifts, and sometimes the latter beat out the former.
The last 12 months have been a busy time for snowboarding and snowboarders, none particularly more so than Louie Vito. Snowlife last spoke with Louie a little over a year ago when he was coming off a successful competitive season.
Since then, Louie has truly kept himself busy not only in snowboarding itself, but in raising the profile of all snowboarders and snowboarding worldwide. Snowlife caught up with Louie to get the low down on his past 12 months and what's to come for the season.
The rider list was packed with heavy hitters that were ready to slay. The halfpipe competition was changed to due to the inclement weather leading up to the contest: It ran with one super final, with each rider getting two runs each to please the judges and take care of business. Cardrona's halfpipe shaper John Melville worked through the night, with a snowstorm that didn't let up until 2 a.
The freshly-cut pipe was then salted, slipped and dyed, setting the stage for a stunt ditch battle of epic proportions. At last year's Global Open here in New Zealand Shaun White won the comp with back-to-back double corks, but this year Louie Vito stepped up the game with a triple threat double cork combo frontside double-cork to Cab double-cork to double crippler.
But that only got him third place! Vito arrived in New Zealand only a couple of days before the event and had not landed a competition run since last March's U. Because he was granted a free pass to the finals due to the weather Louie gambled that he would land his extremely difficult run in at least one of his only two chances in the finals.
He almost landed the perfect run his first shot but couldn't quite make his third double cork. His "go big or go home" mantra put plenty of pressure on this Olympian but he plowed through the pressure and landed a beautiful final run that shot him from the bottom of the pack to the podium. The Burton NZ Open will go down once again in the history books as a preview of the progressive riding and good times we'll all see on display in this coming Northern Hemisphere winter season.

During a recent TransWorld halfpipe session in Tahoe, CA, Ma Nature came to call in a gorgeous display: 38 inches of pure, organic heaven descended upon Alpine Meadows - in a single night.
With the filming attempts forced on-hold the crew packed up and headed straight to Meadows. Vito had not been gifted a single powder day so far this season, and was determined to get the most out of every slash, shot and chute possible. In the end, it was epic - a day seemingly created for 5 am cat rides and 4 pm liftie bribes.
