Deathstroke would tend to disappear for lengths at a time , but he did have guest appearances in seasons 3, 5, and 6. As it turns out, Deathstroke wasn't part of the original plan for the CW series.
Arrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim has explained in the past that it all started when they were putting together the Arrow pilot. A scene on Lian Yu in the episode teased Slade Wilson by showing the Deathstroke mask with an arrow through it. Guggenheim said that pilot director David Nutter was looking for something to fit into this scene, and that was when Geoff Johns who co-wrote the pilot suggested that they use Deathstroke's mask [via EW ].
After it was agreed to use the mask as a fun DC Comics Easter egg, the idea grew from there. However the machine had served it's purpose and Slade now has his army, and uses his own personal blood to inject Isabel and restores her to life. To ensure Sebastian became mayor and to traumatize Oliver, Slade used a truck to crash the Queens limo. While they were unconscious he tied Oliver up and held Moira and Thea at gun point in a scenario identical to Ivo holding Sara and Shado at gun point and also tells Oliver to choose.
Slade also mentions that he knows exactly how the scenario went down, claiming that Shado told him point to her but Oliver only sees the woods and realizes Slade is seeing hallucinations. Slade also exposed to Moira and Thea that he was on the island with Oliver and Oliver's relationship with Shado, but before he could force Oliver to choose Moira stood up and begged Slade to kill her instead.
Slade aimed the gun but lowered it, admiring Moira's courage but expressing sorrow that she didn't pass it onto Oliver before impaling her with his sword. As Slade walked off, he tells Oliver that he will kill one more person before he kills Oliver, then leaves him and Thea to grieve. Later Slade, having tapped Oliver and all his allies' phones, learned of the Mirakuru cure from Central City and sends his bodyguard to retrieve it as he smiled in victory. As Slade continued to watch the destruction Sebastian barges into his office and demanded an explanation to why the entire D.
Slade was later handed the cure by a soldier who found the S. Labs courier, and later sent Isabel to kill Sebastian when he stole the cure telling him goodbye one last time. Arrow and Canary, knowing the cure works and arming themselves with injection arrows, storm the office where Deathstroke, Ravager and a number of henchmen are waiting for them. Though Deathstroke was confident they could defeat the two, not fully convinced the cure would even work, but Arrow elaborated that they didn't come alone and the League of Assassins , led by Nyssa Raatko storm the office, defeated the soldiers and killed Ravager.
Arrow attempted to shoot Deathstroke with the cure but he was too heavily armored for the cure to affect him and escaped, using a grapple line with his sword. Slade had Laurel kidnapped by also watches a video in Queen Mansion of Oliver telling Felicity that he loves her, much to Slade's shock. Believing he has kidnapped the wrong woman Slade kidnaps her also.
After the army is defeated Slade informs Oliver of the kidnap and lures him to a foundry, forcing him to choose between Felicity and Laurel , the way Oliver chose Sara over Shado.
Arrow arrives and tries to talk Slade out of killing them. He also reveals he is aware of his hallucinations of Shado and that the real Shado would be horrified with what Slade has become. But as he defends his actions Felicity injects a hidden syringe containing a dose of the Mirakuru cure into Slade's neck, taking his enhanced abilities away.
He then dueled Oliver, for some time but the latter managed to restrain Slade against a pillar, despite demanding that Oliver kill him. Some time later, Slade was incarcerated in a A.
Oliver visited him and talked to him. Slade however argued that Oliver isn't a hero and will always be a murder since he created him, which Oliver acknowledges and that if it weren't for Slade he wouldn't be alive today.
However it's also because of Slade, despite all he'd done, his plot is what made him not a killer but a hero and thanks him. As Oliver is walking out Slade angrily scolds him for believing he won't escape and yells to him that he keeps his promises as Oliver leaves, continuing to yell at him as he leaves. In late , Slade received a cellmate; his old friend Digger Harkness.
After learning that, Slade escaped. Slade quickly attacked and knocked them both out and placed them in the Supermax. Slade said he would leave them on the island like Oliver did to him and telling him to be grateful that he didn't bury Thea next to Shado, then taunting Oliver about Shado's death again and stating that had he told him the truth himself Moira may still be alive.
Slade told Thea that her brother always will keep secrets for her, before leaving them behind. However Oliver and Thea were able to free themselves and pursued Slade as he attempted to use their plane to escape. Slade ambushed them and took Thea hostage with a gun, but was surprised when she fought back and Slade fought both Thea and Oliver simultaneously, before Thea pulled a gun on him and wanted to kill him.
However, Oliver managed to convince her not to kill Slade, but she still shot him in the shoulder. Returning to the Supermax, Slade noted that Thea was not the killer Oliver was.
As Oliver was leaving Slade taunted him about the people he had lost and how losing any more would leave nothing of Oliver Queen. Not long after that, the psychological effects of the Mirakuru fully wore off, and as a result, Slade finally became sane again. For the next two years, Slade thought about his actions. He finally accepted that Shado's death wasn't Oliver's fault, and forgave him.
He also started to regret his actions, and took full responsibility for them. In May , Slade was recruited by Oliver to face Prometheus and his team. As Oliver arrived, Slade expressed his gratification for the former's return.
Oliver offered Slade information on his son Joe's whereabouts in exchange for help freeing Oliver's friends and son. Slade donned his Deathstroke armor and set out with his Oliver and Harkness, who Oliver also freed, to find and rescue Oliver's friends. When they found some of them trapped in Edward Fyers' old cages, the trio was ambushed by Talia al Ghul and Evelyn Sharp , at which point Harkness revealed they had recruited him earlier and he betrayed Oliver and Slade.
Harkness implored to his old friend to make the sensible choice and join him on the winning side, and Slade seemingly accepted, telling Evelyn to put her gun to Oliver's head, but as Harkness expressed gratitude at Slade being smart in his decision, Slade berated Digger for simply assuming that he was on the winning side and suddenly assaulted his former friend.
As Slade forced Sharp into a cage, he coldly advised Sharp to pick better friends since they left her behind, but she remained defiant, stating it might as well be part of the plan. After Malcolm led Oliver's friends to the plane to escape, Nyssa, Oliver and Slade went to track down Talia's trail to the hideout.
As Nyssa went ahead to recover the lost trail, an amused Slade mentions how Oliver married Ra's al Ghul's daughter Nyssa instead of Felicity, and helped Oliver to come to terms with his father's suicide. Slade told Oliver he needed to forgive himself and not blame himself for his father's death, advice that Oliver later accepts to make peace with his past sins.
Upon reaching the enemy hideout, Slade helped Oliver reunite with his friends by feigning betrayal yet again, and then assisted Nyssa al Ghul against her sister's acolytes upon her triumph over Talia. Slade then fought alongside Team Arrow and Nyssa in defeating the acolytes with Adrian Chase, and witnessed Oliver besting Chase, but was visibly shaken when Chase claimed to have murdered Oliver's son William.
He took his mask off and stepped towards Oliver with sympathy, only for Oliver to express disbelief at the claim. Oliver had Slade accompany his friends in getting off the island.
When Team Arrow learned the plane they wanted to use was sabotaged, Slade said that they would not leave without Oliver and William, even though Oliver asked him over comms to escort the others to an A.
When Adrian Chase killed himself to detonate the explosives covering the island, [38] Slade and Team Arrow had managed to survive, although Slade survived due to his durable armor rather than the plane. He and Team Arrow then split up to look for survivors, where he came across a comatose Thea. He then bumped into Oliver and took him to Thea. Five months after the events on Lian Yu, Slade visited Oliver in Thea's hospital room, informing him that thanks to Oliver's intel, he finally got a lead on his son Joe's whereabouts in Calgary, and how he was flying there later that night.
Slade then gave Oliver the advice on how he should be prepared to choose between being the Green Arrow and being the father of his son, and how they could only do both for so long, before Oliver and Slade wished each other luck.
Deathstroke fights the Jackals ' mercenaries. He called Oliver on his cellphone a few weeks later asking for help in finding his son, Joe. When Slade and Oliver return to get the body, they discover that Joe wasn't killed but kidnapped by the Jackals. Slade discovered where they are located and drugs Oliver and leaves a message for Oliver to return to his son. Slade attacks the Jackals and kills many of them but he is soon surrounded where he discovers that the leader of the Jackals is in fact Joe.
Slade is able to talk to his son, who supposedly convinces Slade to join the Jackals, Slade and Oliver reunite and the pair agree to stop Joe, but Oliver is captured and Joe tries to force Slade to kill him.
Slade contemplates killing Oliver, but instead frees him, and the pair escape. Slade confronts his son, and the two end up fighting. Even though Slade holds back during the fight, he still has Joe beaten, until Joe reveals that Slade has another son, Grant, whom Joe implies to have killed. This causes Slade to drop his guard and subsequently almost be killed by Joe, but Oliver saves him. Slade tells Oliver not to kill him.
Joe escapes and Slade and Oliver part ways with Slade planning on finding both Joe and Grant, not believing that Joe killed him. During the Anti-Monitor Crisis , Slade as well as everyone in the multiverse except for the seven Paragons , was killed in an antimatter wave by the Anti-Monitor on December 10, , [42] only to be restored a month later, after the Paragons and the Spectre created a new universe.
During the Anti-Monitor Crisis in , Oliver sacrificed his life to reboot the multiverse, creating a new universe, Earth-Prime , where he ensured that Moira would be able to survive Slade, thus; changing Slade's own history and fate as well. In , after Slade abducted Moira, Thea , and Oliver in order to exact revenge on Oliver, Moira volunteered herself to be killed so that her children would be spared. After admiring Moira's courage, Slade brandished his sword and prepared to kill her but was subdued before he could do so and viciously attacked by Oliver, who had broken free from his bonds.
While it's unknown whether Oliver still released Slade in exchange for his help dealing with Adrian Chase, by early , Slade was no longer being held in A. In the flashbacks, Slade is less cold and distant, but retains his appearance of an anti-hero. Slade is a man of honor and good morals, who puts up a tough act, but underneath is a caring individual, as displayed by his rescue of Oliver from Edward Fyers and Billy Wintergreen , even after stating that he'd leave the island if Oliver didn't return in time.
Slade does not take well to traitors, which he displays by killing Billy, his friend and partner for many years until he betrayed Slade in exchange for his own life. Slade is very open about his opinions of people, frequently calling Oliver an idiot, and doesn't hide that he likes Shado, which she often smiles at.
Slade only trusts and cares for people who have proven themselves genuinely trustworthy to him, as he trusts Oliver Queen and Shado , but was less trusting of Sara Lance as they had barely known each other.
Slade's personality takes a turn for the worse after his injection with the Mirakuru , which combined with his grief over the loss of Shado makes him impulsive, reckless, aggressive, violent, and bent on revenge against Ivo.
Once he discovers Oliver's shared role in Shado's death he becomes completely hell bent on revenge against him which would stay for years after, tarnishing the brotherly bond they once had and making them bitter enemies.
In the present day Slade's anger and hatred has increased more to the point of full vendetta against Oliver upon learning of his survival on the island. He is also arrogant, overconfident and boastful of his Mirakuru powers, as has no fear of Oliver because of them; these traits are well deserved as bullets do no harm to him and even getting cut to the bone doesn't affect him as it all heals back, though explosives and poisons can still harm him but only for a brief time.
Slade threatened Sebastian Blood. Slade is rarely caught off guard, he also has little tolerance for disobedience, failure and disloyalty, as multiple times he threatened to kill Sebastian Blood for his failures, eventually having him killed for betraying him. Due to the Mirakuru, Slade's sense of honor has become twisted, and when it comes to Oliver, he is cruel, sadistic and ruthless. He displays little emotion when killing innocent people. He also has developed a complete disregard for human life and watched in amusement as his army tore Starling City apart, his only regret being that Shado couldn't be there.
Deathstroke originally appeared as a villain in New Teen Titans 2, vowing vengeance against them because he blamed the teenagers for the death of his son, Grant. Grant had undergone genetic modifications that ultimately killed him, which led to Deathstroke taking his frustration out on the teens. However, while Deathstroke's rivalry with Robin, Starfire and the rest dates back to his origins, Deathstroke's rivalry with Oliver Queen is much more recent.
In an event that had so little to do with Deathstroke personally, Wilson met the man who would prove to be one of his greatest enemies. In a notoriously one-sided battle, Deathstroke defended Doctor Light from the entire Justice League , easily dismantling them one by one.
He runs the Flash through on his sword, overpowers Green Lantern's will with his own, and it seems as though he has a tactical answer for anything the League is capable of throwing his way. However, this changes when Green Arrow leaps on his back and jabs a broken arrow right through Deathstroke's hollowed-out eye socket.
Wilson acted as a mentor and combat coach to Oliver Queen until he was driven mad by a dose of the superdrug Mirakuru. Feeling betrayed by his student even before Queen put one of his eyes out with an arrow, Wilson swore that he would destroy everything and everyone Oliver Queen loved and leave him begging for death before finally taking his right eye and his life.
He appeared once again in the Season 3 episode " The Return, " when Oliver took his sister Thea to Lian Yu as part of her vigilante training, only for the two to have to fight Deathstroke after he escaped from his cell. Manu Bennett was dissatisfied with the writing on the episode, believing it ridiculous that Slade would have a hard time fighting both Oliver and the relatively green Thea Queen after everything he had accomplished in the first two seasons.
As a result, Bennett swore that he was done playing the Arrowverse's Deathstroke. Arrow faced another obstacle beyond Bennett being unwilling to return after Season 3; Warner Bros. This same policy forced Arrow 's showrunners to abandon their plans to utilize the Suicide Squad as part of John Diggle's on-going storyline, killing off the Arrowverse versions of Deadshot and Amanda Waller.
